NEW! Ideas for storytelling or creative writing and activities too! COMING SOON
1. When Old North Wind started off on his journey and the little sprite- like ones hopped on for the ride they had no idea what adventures were in store. Why, they hadn’t been here for a few minutes when they had already encountered a dragon! And now there were many little striped buzzinglings buzzing about in these happy yellowlings waving in the breeze. Just then something else came along...
Ideas: And what are the Buzzlnglings (are they bees??) Are yellowlings sunflowers? What could happen next? If I were telling the story right now, I think it might be a puppy. I wonder what they will call it.... Activities: 1. First, draw Old North Wind. Think about where he lives and what does he do when he's not blowing somewhere. Does he have friends? 2. Are there any signs of autumn yet? What signs can you see that summer is almost ready to say goodbye? Seeds, acorns, The vegetables such as squash are ready... What can you collect for your nature table.
2. Little mouse watches as Hugo rides carefully down the path on his bike. As soon as he sees what's in the basket he scampers home to tell his mama. Soon, all the mice are running through the grasses following Hugo. When they arrive at the barn they scurry into the rafters to see what happens next...
Ideas: "Mama! Mama!" says Little mouse as he arrives home. "We saw a HUGE egg!" "What kind of egg?" respond Mama. "We think it might be from a dragon" whisper all the little mice...
Activites: see photo of toilet paper roll dragon below!
3. “Adventuring, adventuring, adventuring we go!” the two sang as they ran through the fields of sunflowers. Yesterday they had built a fairy house with sticks and stones then lined a path as long as Hugo was tall with sunflower petals. They made a river out of tiny bits of mica and a bridge over the river with bark. Today the dragon was about and that was all the adventure they needed - or so they thought. The first thing Adelaide thought when she saw the purple and blue swirling object was...
Ideas: "it took a minute to realize the object was something
Activities: Build a fairy house!
4. They sang to call the dragon to her precious egg...
Ideas: Make up a song. It will be beautiful Activities: Make some play dough (I always like the cooked recipe that includes cream of tartar best) and make dragon eggs!
5. The weather vane twisted and turned with a sudden wind. Adelaide peeked out to see if the dragon was nearby, but instead she saw something else that made her giggle with delight...
Ideas: Ask your child what they think made her giggle
Activites: Open a book to a random page and look for the first sentence you see and use whatever that is to be what Adelaide saw :)
6. The dragon had come to live above the little village nestled below many years ago. She loved to hear the villagers sing and she also loved to watch them work and play. Sometimes she wished she could join them but she had heard their stories about dragons and knew they feared her. She wasn’t sure how to help them know that she was truly a friend...
Ideas: How could she help them understand? Maybe one day during their yearly bonfire celebration in the fall they couldn't find any matches or any way to light the fire. Adelaide and Hugo sent a message via their friend swallow to the dragon asking for help. The dragon came down and the villagers were terrified and when she swooped down to the middle of their celebration they ran for their very lives. Then, she gently unleashed just the right amount of fire upon the pile of sticks and brush and flew in a large circle once and then back up to her mountain home. The villagers then understood something amazing that they had not even fathomed before...
7. Bzzzzzzz. Bzzzzzzzz. Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzz The bees share the sunflowers with flies and little beetles all enjoying the feast of pollen and nectar. Sometimes when Hugo and Adelaide sit in the field and close their eyes they imagine that the buzzing of the bees will make them small so they can feast right along with the beetles the flies and the bees. One day they fell asleep in the field only to wake from the dream with pollen in their hair and on their noses. “Was it real?” they wondered...
Ideas: Of course it was real! They knew because of the pollen in their hair and on their noses and also because from that day on the beetles and bees seemed to whisper to them secrets.
8. Dragonfly understands the dragons language as they are distantly related (of course). Every Wednesday dragonfly goes up to dragon’s cave for story time. Dragon tells stories of long ago and far away. Recently, ladybug has joined them. Dragonfly’s favorite story is about a...
Ideas: Well, I'm pretty sure that the dragon's favorite story is about the land they lived in as a young dragon. This land was one of lakes and rivers and waterfalls. A land of fairies, gnomes and sprites. A land of magic. She would tell the dragonfly and ladybug stories each week about a different friend from her youth. Her favorite story to tell is the one about the time when she was floating down the river on her back and suddenly she hear a loud roar of water. It was the waterfall! She was too close to get to the edge and she didn't know how to fly yet. "Oh no" she thought. Just as she went over the edge about 133 fairies came and each pushed up from underneath the large dragon - because even though she was young she was already quite big. They carried her to the shore and they all introduced themselves and it was the beginning of dragon's beautiful friendship with the fairies.
9. Long, long ago three twinkling stars came shooting out of the sky toward the earth. Adelaide and Hugo’s great, great, great grandfather was a boy then. A story had been passed down from grandfather to grandchildren that he followed the trails of light until he came upon what was left of the stars on the ground. Collecting the fine dust he took it to the blacksmith who created the weather vane, the same that still graced the top of the barn, from the heavenly metal. One evening as A and H lie outside looking up at the twinkling sky, the two saw three shooting stars and had an idea...
10. The dragon, fearsome as she was to behold to those who did not know her, loved looking down upon the village nestled below. She would wake to the baker singing “Blow wind blow, and go mill go.” and hear the children singing good morning dear sun. Her heart would warm at the sound of mother’s singing to their little ones at night when it was time for sleep. Singing was also what she would do to her precious little one, not yet hatched, in the morning, at noon and at night. The song went like this..
11. The golden fog descended upon the village. “Where had it come from?” everyone wondered. Was it because of the dragon? Or had Old North Wind brought it in? Adelaide and Hugo thought it must be because of the...
12. And then one day something very amazing happened..
2. Cut your toilet paper roll to make a mouth and ears - or maybe they are eyebrows... ;) Paint or draw to color the body. Cut pieces of tissue paper and glue them in for fire. Blow on the other end and watch the fire go!
