The birthday story is always my favorite story to tell in the Kindergarten. The part when the angel (it can also be a fairy or other special being) has left the star child to rest for a bit after he or she has chosen his or her family and goes to the parents when they are sleeping is my favorite part.  It always made me cry, even though I try so hard not to because I am telling the story of the the whole class and the birthday child's parents!
The angel whispers into the mother's ear "Soon
you will have a child." and into the father's ear
"Soon you will have a child." and when they wake
up the next morning they know their little love is
     on the way.
There is such simple and beautiful truth in the birthday story, no matter how you tell it.

Once upon a time, high in the heavens, there lives a little star child. This child loves to fly through the clouds and the stars, up, up, up to the sun and back down again. The star child has a friend, the angel. The angel and the star child play together, sing together and tell stories to one another. One day, while playing hide and seek, the star child saw an amazing blue and green jewel through a hole in the clouds. "What is that?" asked the star child. "That is earth." replied the angel. The star child kept playing and forgot until one day it happened again and she went closer this time. She saw incredible wonders _______________ (you may write some of your child's favorite things - elephants, the ocean, ferris wheels etc. below to insert here) Later, the star child told the angel "I want to go there." and the angel replied "First you must choose a mother and father." (or mother/mother, father/father, adoptive mother/father - your family configuration.)
The very next day the star child went back to earth to search for her parents. She looked in the hot, dry desert, the high, cool mountains, by the sparkling sea, in big cities and small villages until she saw them. "Those are my parents." said the star child to the angel. "You must go and rest now." The angel tucked the star child in and kissed her on the forehead. That very night the angel went to the man and woman and whispered in the mother's ear "Soon you will have a child." and she whispered in the father's ear "Soon you will have a child." and when the man and woman woke the next morning they knew the most special and wonderful gift was on its way.

Next we talk about what the parents have named the child, any siblings who also welcomed the child and what the child liked to do during each year of his/her life. The children really enjoy it when something silly that they did when they were younger is included. It can be people or places they visited, things they learned - walking, talking, first words, trips to grandma and grandpa's, first time on a plane or in the ocean etc.
The doll will come with wings but will be made so that it will remain completely intact if it is played with and the wings just happen to come off :)
