A Wise Woman and Storytelling Expert

One of the most amazing books I have read is called Storytelling with Children by Nancy Mellon. Her book is full of wisdom and she is a true master of storytelling. Click here to see her site.

Here is a quote from her book about setting the space for your storytelling with quiet and breath..

The quiet rhythms of our breathing immediately reach children, and the child within all of us. As we settle down to tell a child a story and prepare to say the opening words, each complete breath is heaven to children.
This process of becoming storytellers is just as amazing for us as it is for the children. It opens up a whole new world of imagination and connection that can nourish our souls. And we haven't even begun to tell the story yet! I would love to hear how you create your storytelling space and how it has felt for you from when you first began, or how it feels now as a more experienced teller of tales. Please feel free to share in the comment section below.

This is so lovely!
I started telling stories to my children, rather than just reading them, when we began to attend a wonderful Steiner/Waldorf playgroup in my dear friends home. She told the most delightful stories, and they felt so nourishing to me. My daughter was spellbound! I became inspired to try telling stories too 😊
Since then I have told a story with props most weeks. I dyed a big rainbow silk to lay out on my lap and the floor (after seeing our playgroup leader use one in this way). I gathered small lovely wooden and felt figures to use.
I really enjoy this process, and it is so calming for me. Lately I have had trouble finding stories that my very sensitive daughter will enjoy...any kind of challenge or difficulty in the story worries her at the moment. I am trying to come back to stories of simple delight, where there aren't events, just daily life.
We have also recently started a bedtime tradition of a made up story about a little bird. He lives in a tall tree with his mother, father and brother and spends time with his friends cricket and beetle. The pace of these stories is slow and only normal daily life happens in them (meals, games, walks to the creek). Often the little bird yawns and relaxes into his bed just as my kids are ready for sleep too. It is very pleasant! 😊🌟
I love your storytelling ideas, I'm really enjoying reading all about them and your gorgeous pictures! Thankyou 😊🦋
